Un experto antólogo como es Hugh Lamb escoge esta antología para su colaboración dentro del libro Horror: The 100 Best Books (1988). Lo justifica destacando que es masiva (en efecto, más de 1000 páginas), y acoge relatos largos o novelas cortas que son ya auténticos clásicos como Carmilla, de Le Fanu o The Turn of the Screw, de Henry James, junto con relatos cortos que son considerados referencias del género, así los de Wilkie Collins, Ambrose Bierce, Maupassant y otros autores del XIX. Pero también incluye contemporáneos, el propio Walpole (con un magnífico cuento), además de Walter de la Mare, Arthur Machen, Oliver Onions o M. R. James. En resumidas cuentas, dice, "la mejor antología que se ha hecho jamás". Es un juicio hiperbólico, está claro; pero, sin duda, se trata de una antología de las buenas, que vale la pena conocer y reconstruir en castellano.

Gran parte de este contenido está ya disponible en traducciones, bien en antologías o en colecciones de los autores. Pero se echa en falta una mayor presencia de Marjorie Bowen, Margaret Irwin (la autora del inolvidable "The Book", pero aquí representada con un relato nunca traducido) o A. M. Burrage, entre algunos otros, en nuestra lengua.
